Not long ago my opposite neighbour used to sit in her place, windows wide open with his back facing the street. A heavy smoker and a giant of a man, with exceptionally big feet that forced him to wear custom made shoes. He smoked his cigarettes there and read his paper, rain or shine, often dressed in pijamas only. He loved to make long walks, but never saluted anyone in the neighborhood. Last year he deceased.The white cat is an occasional lodger with his widow, an elderly woman of German descent, an introvert person with a great sense of style. She talks with a heavy German accent, and has an unusual gift for noticing quirks, resentment, and paradox resident in our culture. The white cat is watchful; seemingly irreverent of physical danger.
