-Breaking News-

On Tuesday the 11th September 2001 I was en route to a colleague of mine based in the South of The Netherlands.
Whilst driving down to him we heard breaking news of the WTC attack, an unprecendented event that for lack of visual reference seemed simply unfathomable. Not until we reached our friends’ home, could we witness the live report on CNN ourselves. Since our friends living room is stacked with stylistic gadgets and avant-garde furniture, the seriousness of the events were somehow ridiculed by the design savvyness of the surrounding domestic environment.
It took a while before the scope of the disaster started to sink in for us. As we went back later that afternoon the tragedy was in full spin. That evening I logged on to a bulletin board (‘Conference’ ) of a commercial artists organisation in the US. The transcript of that first day which I have used for this post, depicts vividly and emotionally the human effects of the Manhattan drama and offers a firsthand account of the making of recent history.

I am devastated. I was outside walking (I'm just above SoHo) the dog when a plane came very low over head and I thought it was going to hit something. A minute later it did. As I came around on MacDougal St. about 10 minutes
later, I saw a 2nd plane hit.

My heart and thoughts are with the victims. I can only imagine the horror people thought of Pearl Harbor, now I know.

Our world is so sad.

Say a prayer for all those people, sitting in
their little cubicles, drinking coffee.......

Now, also say one more for the little people
in the news media, the artists, the photographers,
who will be busy for days trying to sort it out.

I still fight the old panic feeling, I was
an info graphic artist for many years. I would
now be drawing a schematic of the collapse.
Somewhere, someone is.

When you think you have a bad assignment....
think of them.......

Yes, Chris.
My niece is devastated. She handles corporate travellers for United. 45 minutes ago I talked with her on
the phone when she confirmed that 175 went down at or near Camp David or the Pentagon. Because it
hadn't been released to the news yet she couldn't return her messages.
One of her clients left many messages for her trying to find out about 175. His whole family was on it.

Again, yes, Chris. Pray and donate blood.

Anyone in the NY/NJ area, if you can get to your local hospital to donate blood, DO IT. It's easy, quick &
doesn't hurt even a little bit.
I just heard on Channel 2 that you need to already have a donor card to donate. So if you do, GO!
Remember, you cannot have a cold or a rash, or be on certain meds-- if you think you CAN donate blood
(you have to be between 18-75, and weigh at least 110 lbs.) PLEASE do it.

NY has been in a blood emergency all summer, due to no longer accepting Euro-blood (because of the risk
of contracting Creutzfeld-Jakob syndrome).

It's something ALMOST EVERYONE can do, and it will really help that awful sad feeling in the pit of your
stomach.
Prayers & blessings to all~

Tom,

Thank you. Jerry and I, our families and the rest of the staff are all fine as far as I
know. The phones have been off and on all day- thank God for the Internet that let us stay connected.

I worked at home today. Although I am not as close to the WTC as Campbell, I was walking in my front
door when the first plane came in low overhead. Then the rest of this endless morning followed. I am still
watching the belches of smoke as I write this.

I walked up to 22nd St. to get my daughter from school, and the similarity to a war zone was
unmistakable. People bandaged and covered in soot, some laughing wildly, some numb and vacant.

It's hard to watch. It's impossible to look away.

Well, Campbell, I for one am glad you and yours are okay and I'm sure everyone else is, too.

I looked at those buildings burning and could only think of the people inside. The buildings can be
replaced.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone there and at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. And of
course all of the families that will never have their loved ones arrive in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

I'll even say a prayer or two for the people that are celebrating this horrible atrocity.

Good post, Claudia.

In fact, I'd like to add that many planes have been diverted to Toronto Pearson Intl. Airport.

For Canadians:

If you are feeling the need to help with this terrible catastrophe, one can give blood (as Canada has been
asked to help) at the Manulife Centre, 55 Bloor St W. 12-4 PM and also at 67 College St from 11-3PM.
Also the radio has broadcast that people who are stranded here from various airlines need billeting, the
number to call is 416-338-0338.

Also, if any New Yorkers can manage to get the hell out of there any time soon, take refuge wherever you
can. I welcome anybody to come to my place that wants to get away.. I'm serious.

God help us all.

Very generous, Gary.

Regarding Remy's post above. I watched the palestinians laughing and whooping it up, handing out candy
and celebrating this terrible catastrophe. I cannot agree more that it is despicable behavior.

But I must also add that when the Oklahoma bombing occurred I was one of those that immediately
thought it was Middle Eastern terrorist plot. And we know now who actually did it: a corn-fed American
boy.

So, until we know for sure who carried this out I hope we don't automatically start blaming certain groups
of people. Even though they hate America it is entirely possible that a palestinian group had nothing to do
with it.

Let's find out who did this. And then let's wipe them off the face of the earth.

I also have two other dearly loved cousins who both work within TWO BLOCKS of the World Trade

They are a very poor people who are
easily influenced by propaganda. Yes
their attitude stinks but people who see
themselves at war celebrate their
(perceived) enemies downfalls.

No one has claimed responsibility. Don't
react. It's just as possible that the attack
came from some unidentified source who
want the American people to react in a
particular way for ulterior motives.

Good news my friend and my roommate's Nephew went in to work early today so he narrowly escaped
after the impacts but before the collapses. Been sweating with worry all day for him, since he and his wife
just had a baby! Still have no outgoing phone service and tomorrow, I am outta here, if they open the
bridges and tunnels. Good idea to give blood. I wish I could, but a bout of hepatitis in my late teen years
keeps me from donating. The worse is yet to come.
God I hope the politicians spare us any rhetoric.

PS From my rooftop I can see the burning continues and another building just collapsed. What a trip.

Martha and I are numb. We just heard on
CNN the report of the number of brave
fire fighters and police who are lost. We
have followed this all day and become
more devastated by each report. Our
hearts and prayers go out to all those
who lost their lives and those who lost
loved ones.
We are regular donors at the local Red
Cross and will be standing in the now
three hour lines here. Martha's the real
trooper she gave not too long ago and I
think she just makes it under the limit to
give now. BTW the Red Cross will need
blood for months to come , so if you can't
give blood now make an appointment to
donate to replenish the already too small
supply that that will be diminished by this
horror.

Love to you all,
