INTERIOR MONOLOGUE

--

The following transcript is part of a chat session which occurred on a NYC based commercial artists web community three years ago. The record conveys a first witness account of the indelible events which marked September 11, 2001. The chatboard participants that day; comprised of mostly NYC artists, express directly their shock and anquish over the tremor which perplexed the Western world, and continues to ravage our perception of occidental bliss today.

Eyewitnesses saying the Pentagon was a deliberate strike, the airliner aimed for it.
Whoever did this...these are Acts of War.

I am devastated. I was outside walking (I'm
just above SoHo) the dog when a plane came
very low over head and I thought it was going
to hit something. A minute later it did. As I
came around on MacDougal St. about 10 minutes
later, I saw a 2nd plane hit.
My heart and thoughts are with the victims. I
can only imagine the horror people thought of
Pearl Harbor, now I know.
Our world is so sad.

It's surreal.
All of San Francisco is shut down as a precaution.
God help everyone, especially the victims.

Say a prayer for all those people, sitting in
their little cubicles, drinking coffee.......
Now, also say one more for the little people
in the news media, the artists, the photographers,
who will be busy for days trying to sort it out.
I still fight the old panic feeling, I was
an info graphic artist for many years. I would
now be drawing a schematic of the collapse.
Somewhere, someone is.
When you think you have a bad assignment....
think of them.......

I'm in Tribeca 6 blocks from this heinous
cowardly act - its a war zone down here. I
saw the second plane hit and ran down
to get my daughter at PS 234 her school
in shadows of the World Trade center. We
just got out before the 1st tower collapsed
- they are using the school for injuries -
there are horrible injuries - my daughter
is totally freaked. God Help Us All !!!!

My prayers are for are with the victims and the families. For us, the call for support must be answered. This will produce an enormous strain on the blood supply, if the call is made, DONATE.

My niece is devastated. She handles corporate travellers for United. 45 minutes ago I talked with her on the phone when she confirmed that 175 went down at or near Camp David or the Pentagon. Because it hadn't been released to the news yet she couldn't return her messages.
One of her clients left many messages for her trying to find out about 175. His whole family was on it.
Again, yes, Chris. Pray and donate blood.

What a horrible day. I can't believe the
WTC is gone! This is an act of War and
somebody is going to have to pay.
There was panic around here today. We
live not too far from the Pentagon and
people were heading to West Virginia. If
the roads weren't so clogged we might
have joined them.
My heart goes out to all those in Lower
Manhattan.

The Roaches still live and this site still works...this city is like Hiroshima right now...I wanna get out and can't, my partners Nephew is MIA he works there, we are freaking out! Phones don't work either.
This is UNREAL!

I am marveling at the interconnectedness of
our world these days.
Yes, theispot still works. But what will not.?
I'm sitting in Florida, contemplating whether
or not this affects me much.
I'm sitting, doing work, not getting feedback
via email from a client, planning on delivering
final via email. Clients servers are in Chicago,
Chicago is afraid they'll be next, sending
everyone home......
If more metropolitan areas all panic & send
people home, and stuff starts to shut down....
just imagine.... phones, email, banking.....
I guess stock market is already killed.
The scope of things nowadays.............

I am totally collapsed by all those images
I saw those last minutes on TV in France.
TERRIBLE thing : Some palestinians
laughing and in joy !!! Those people are
inhuman !
If someone knows an organization to help
families of victims, keep me posted.

Anyone in the NY/NJ area, if you can get to your local hospital to donate blood, DO IT. It's easy, quick & doesn't hurt even a little bit.
I just heard on CHannel 2 that you need to already have a donor card to donate. So if you do, GO!
Remember, you cannot have a cold or a rash, or be on certain meds-- if you think you CAN donate blood (you have to be between 18-75, and weigh at least 110 lbs.) PLEASE do it.
NY has been in a blood emergency all summer, due to no longer accepting Euro-blood (because of the risk of contracting Creutzfeld-Jakob syndrome).
It's something ALMOST EVERYONE can do, and it will really help that awful sad feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Prayers & blessings to all~

Get to your family, hug them and don't let go.
This is horrible.
Seeing what happened from the first plane crash on...unbelievable.

I can't believe what has happened. I don't
know if anyone has claimed responsibility
but there was no one the last time I heard
the news. I hope everyone is okay. Jami
and Gerry are, by the sounds of it thank
God. I got a few emails from people I was
concerned about and I know a few others
are okay.
I'm really sorry for you and I hope that you
don't have relations who are effected
though I know some of you will.
All the very best. Sorry for your troubles.
Take care.

Thank you. Jerry and I, our families and the rest of staff are all fine as far as I know. The phones have been off and on all day- thank God for the Internet that let us stay connected.
I worked at home today. Although I am not as close to the WTC as Campbell, I was walking in my front door when the first plane came in low overhead. Then the rest of this endless morning followed. I am still watching the belches of smoke as I write this.
I walked up to 22nd St. to get my daughter from school, and the similarity to a war zone was unmistakable. People bandaged and covered in soot, some laughing wildly, some numb and vacant.
It's hard to watch. It's impossible to look away.

We've just been told to pack our bags
everything south of Franklin has to be
evacuated, there are 20 separate building
fires burning in lower Manhattan.

Campbell

--

Date:Tuesday, September 11, 2001 05:07 PM

Well, Campbell, I for one am glad you and yours are okay and I'm sure everyone else is, too.
I looked at those buildings burning and could only think of the people inside. The buildings can be replaced.
My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone there and at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. And of course all of the families that will never have their loved ones arrive in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
I'll even say a prayer or two for the people that are celebrating this horrible atrocity.

Tim

Regarding Remy's post above. I watched the palestinians laughing and whooping it up, handing out candy and celebrating this terrible catastrophe. I cannot agree more that it is despicable behavior.
But I must also add that when the Oklahoma bombing occurred I was one of those that immediately thought it was Middle Eastern terrorist plot. And we know now who actually did it: a corn-fed American boy.
So, until we know for sure who carried this out I hope we don't automatically start blaming certain groups of people. Even though they hate America it is entirely possible that a palestinian group had nothing to do with it.
Let's find out who did this. And then let's wipe them off the face of the earth.

I feel sick... I have a cousin who's a police officer in NYC, and no one's heard anything from him yet. I'm sure he's fine, helping rescue the survivors...
I also have two other dearly loved cousins who both work within TWO BLOCKS of the World Trade Center... word is they're fine, thank god.
I'm so shaken by this (as we all are)...
I saw one guy on tv who said it's like a hallucination - that's exactly what it feels like... I can't imagine being in New York right now.

Tim, no I am not sure (and nobody here)
that some Palestinians are responsible, I
just blame their ATTITUDE, and I think it
must be blamed.
All the best everyone
I am all with you in this tragedy

Remy

They are a very poor people who are
easily influenced by propaganda. Yes
their attitude stinks but people who see
themselves at war celebrate their
(perceived) enemies downfalls.
No one has claimed responsibility. Don't
react. It's just as possible that the attack
came from some unidentified source who
want the American people to react in a
particular way for ulterior motives.

Good news my friend and my roommate's Nephew went in to work early today so he narrowly escaped after the impacts but before the collapses. Been sweating with worry all day for him, since he and his wife just had a baby! Still have no outgoing phone service and tomorrow, I am outta here, if they open the bridges and tunnels. Good idea to give blood. I wish I could, but a bout of hepatitis in my late teen years keeps me from donating. The worse is yet to come.
God I hope the politicians spare us any rhetoric.
PS From my rooftop I can see the burning continues and another building just collapsed. What a trip.

Such tragedy and my heart goes out to all those victims involved!
This morning my daughter who still is awaiting the birth of her daughter soon to be born came in and told me the shocking news. We felt so numb as I was actually supposed to be flying out this morning on American Airlines but got on a bus about a week and half ago when my daughter was experiencing early labor pains.
My prayers goes out to all those victims and their families.

Martha and I are numb. We just heard on
CNN the report of the number of brave
fire fighters and police who are lost. We
have followed this all day and become
more devastated by each report. Our
hearts and prayers go out to all those
who lost their lives and those who lost
loved ones.
We are regular donors at the local Red
Cross and will be standing in the now
three hour lines here. Martha's the real
trooper she gave not too long ago and I
think she just makes it under the limit to
give now. BTW the Red Cross will need
blood for months to come , so if you can't
give blood now make an appointment to
donate to replenish the already too small
supply that that will be diminished by this
horror.

Love to you all,
Martha and Jim

Words fail me. I just wanted to log on here and post my support to you in the NY and DC areas. I'm listening to mayor Giuliani now, talking about the fire and police personnel who are dead and lost right now, personal friends he named, as well as all those unknown at this time. Take care, all of you.

Alice mirrors my feelings about this indescribable horror...I'm torn between wanting to lash out at those who perpetrate or celebrate this act and dreading the certain backlash that will catch more innocents in its wake...I'm in shock and have no answers. God bless all of you in the NY and DC areas, with a special prayer to those with friends or relatives in the safety services - the ones who ran directly into the path of destruction to offer aid.
