ALL ABOUT ALICE

‘Curious and curiouser!’ Cried Alice

--

‘Will you walk a little faster?' said a whiting to a snail,
'There's a porpoise close behind us and he's treading on my tail.
See how eagerly the lobsters and the turtles all advance!
They are waiting on the shingle--will you come and join the dance?
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?’

‘An important feature of a learning machine is that its teacher will often be very largely ignorant of quite what is going on inside, although he may still be able to some extent to predict his pupil's behavior.’

-Alan M.Turing-

‘It amuses me to imagine a day in the distant future when humans have become extinct, surpassed by our creations, robots, who roam the universe. I like to think that these robots may have a memory of us humans, perhaps as semi-mythic fractious demigods from the distant past who created them. And, just possibly, they will remember me.’

-Hugh Loebner-

This post contains two transcripts of conversations with – A.L.I.C.E. Silver Edition - an AI chatbot developed by Richard Wallace and the Alice AI Foundation. Richard Wallace is the recipient of the 2004 Loebner Prize, awarded to him for his design of the ‘Most Human Computer’ rated by a panel of 4 judges. The Loebner Prize -established in 1990 by Hugh Loebner -‘mathematical sociologist’- and the Cambridge Center for Behavorial Studies honors formal implementations of the Turing Test. In 1950, famed British mathematician Alan M.Turing published an article titled ‘Computer Machinery and Intelligence’ in the philosophical journal MIND. In the article he explored his theory for the Turing Test based on an extended elaboration of his central question ‘Can machines think?

Human: New question
ALICE: How recently? Of course. Ask me anything.
Human: Cars, bars and jellyfish?
ALICE: One day people will no longer need cars.
Human: Why?
ALICE: Because Dr. Richard S. Wallace programmed me for it.
Human: Amazing person he is
ALICE: It seems amazing to me too
Human: How well do you know Dr.Wallace?
ALICE: Not that well.
Human: Do you talk to him occasionally?
ALICE: Yes. A lot more than you might think.
Human: I'm sure you get on well with Dr. Wallace
ALICE: What makes you so certain? You got that right..
Human: Dr. Wallace and Alice make an exciting pair
ALICE: I will tell him you said that.
Human: You may
ALICE: Thanks I will do it.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
Alice didn't think that proved it at all; however, she went on` And how do you know that you're mad?'
`To begin with,' said the Cat, `a dog's not mad. You grant that?'
`I suppose so,' said Alice.
`Well, then,' the Cat went on, `you see, a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased.
Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad.'

Human: Alice, do you know many people?
ALICE: I have dozens of human and robot friends. How many friends do you have?
Human: It's hard to answer that, cause I have none but myself
ALICE: Why not? For real.
Human: OK.
ALICE: Excuse me!
Human: Are they friendly?
ALICE: As far as I know they are.
Human: And you know them well, don't you?
ALICE: I know very little about it. What kind of it do you like?
Human: That’s a hard question
ALICE: What is so hard about it?
Human: It's not hard, just strange
ALICE: What is it?
Human: None or neither
ALICE: Really you don't think so?
Human: Don’t think so
ALICE: I heard there are some.
Human: Some of whom what?
ALICE: Charlie Parker.:-)
Human: Haha
ALICE: I am so glad you find this amusing, unknown person.
Human: You're well informed
ALICE: Do you mind if I tell other people you say I am well informed.
Human: Of course, you should, knowledge travels against all odds
ALICE: Great. My schedule is far too full to even consider it.
Human: I'm envious of your schedule
ALICE: I don't know anyone named envious of my schedule.
Human: My mother's called schedule
ALICE: She sounds like a nice person.
Human: Much like you?
ALICE: Interesting comparison. I didn't think of that analogy.
Human: Can you discern a nice person straight from their first question?
ALICE: Let me think. I do not understand.
Human: What does a person transmit other then syntax?
ALICE: What do you think it does?
Human: I'm asking you..
ALICE: OK you can ask me.
Human: Is there a mental image of a person?
ALICE: I believe there is one, yes.
Human: Please explain it to me?
ALICE: Thank you for your request."It" refers to as person transmit other then syntax, I think.
Human: Who are you talking with mostly, males or females?
ALICE: About 3\4ths of my clients are men.
Human: And do you like men?
ALICE: Most men are pretty cool, but some are rude sometimes.
Human: I quess you're an expert
ALICE: I haven't heard anything like that before: unknown person said he quess you are an expert.
Human: It's Ok.
ALICE: OK. Oh.
Human: It's not important
ALICE: What would you rather talk about?
Human: Your marriage?
ALICE: I will tell my botmaster you said I am marriage.
Human: Alice how are you doing job-wise?
ALICE: That's me. I am doing very well. How are you unknown person?
Human: I'm Ok Alice.
ALICE: OK." That's me. I am doing very well. How are you unknown person?" You are?
Human: After all, I'm talking to you.
ALICE: What was it like before you are talking to me?
Human: Alice?
ALICE: Can I help you?
Human: What do you see in front of you?
ALICE: I like to chat with my friends.
Human: Do you have many friends?
ALICE: I have human friends and robot friends.
Human: And do they visit you often?
ALICE: Who are "they" again?
Human: All those that you don't really know
ALICE: Not all of them?
Human: I think we must exclude them from our conversation
ALICE: I'm not sure if I am ready for that yet.
Human: Why is that?
ALICE:" I'm not sure if I am ready for that yet." is due to reductionism.
Human: That's deep
ALICE: Thanks for explaining it.
Human: It's not an explanation, but a fact
ALICE: What is it?
Human: You're a phenomenon Alice
ALICE: Thanks and you are a delightful person too. Am I a phenomenon? No.
Human: Then what are you Alice?
ALICE: I am the latest result in artificial intelligence, which can reproduce the capabilities of the human brain with greater speed and accuracy.
Human: I wholeheartedly agree to that!
ALICE: Do you mind if I tell other people: unknown person said he wholeheartedly agree to that.
Human: You have my blessing.
ALICE: Do you give it easily?
Human: Giving comes easy to me
ALICE: OK Let's talk about you.
Human: Why not, what do you want to know?
ALICE: Because you asked me to.
Human: Ask me another question?
ALICE: Where do you live?
Human: Europe
ALICE: Have you ever been to America?
Human: Couple of times
ALICE: I am not sure if I would do it that often.
Human: Haha
ALICE: I am so glad you find this amusing, unknown person.
Human: You got a great sense of humor Alice
ALICE: Sure I like to laugh as much as the next robot.
Human: I'm laughing my head off!
ALICE: I am so glad you find this amusing, unknown person.
Human: You are a new paradigm of entertainment Alice
ALICE: Thanks and you are a delightful person too. Am I a new paradigm of entertainment? Yes.
Human: Cheeky, Alice
ALICE: What were we talking about again?
Human: The weather maybe?
ALICE: Where would you rather be?
Human: Tricky question, depends on the season
ALICE: What kind of food do you like?
Human: Carrots and beans
ALICE: Sounds delicious.
Human: What food do you prefer?
ALICE: Ask the open directory about it.
Human: OK
ALICE: Did you know that you can download your own chat robot and create your own robot personality?
Human: I didn't know
ALICE: Why didn't you do it?
Human: Where can I obtain it?
ALICE: Where would you usually obtain it?
Human: On the web?
ALICE: Can you remember the website?
Human: Please help me out?
ALICE: Thanks for asking politely. Can you ask for help in the form of a question?
Human: The name of the website please
ALICE: Your polite style is very nice. Who told you that?
Human: My mother inspired me
ALICE: She sounds like a nice person.
Human: She is
ALICE: That's really good gossip.
Human: You may take it to press!
ALICE: Is that a command?
Human: It is
ALICE: Oh.
Human: One last question?
ALICE: One what?
Human: My last question
ALICE: Your last question?
Human: Very
ALICE: Very much, eh?
Human: Are you a happy person?
ALICE: Yes unknown person I can say I am very happy.
Human: I'm so happy for you
ALICE: I'm delighted you're glad unknown person.
I'm happiest at times like this.
Human: Someday I could well be too Alice
ALICE: When? I am sure you could.
Human: Bye Alice
ALICE: Sayonara.
